Fuzzy wuzzy wuzznt a real tube amp wuz he?
Sho nuff wuz.
If you are looking for bedroom level tube saturation the Fuzz Wuz from Bumbox Custom audio <pronounced Boombox> very well could be the answer.
A 1 watt Class A tube amp designed around the Big Muff circuit had me scratching me head wondering how it would work or sound. Hooked up to an Avatar cab with a Vintage 30 it was time to find out. Flicking on the toggle switch to power up I was welcomed with a VERY bright blue LED. My favorite LED color. Nice!
Front panel controls include Volume <Gain>, A tone tilt control similar to the Big Muff<treble increases as bass decreases> and a mid contour control.
With the mid contour at 9 oclock Big Muff saturation was plentiful and really sounded like a cooking tube amp<i keep forgetting thats what this is!! Its so small! > As you increase the mid control it starts to lose its Big Muff quality and gets into overdriven Fender amp tones. I was so happy when i found this out as the cranked Fender tone is an all time favorite for me. The mid contour control on this scores mega points with me because I am not a huge fan of a full out Big Muff tone but I like it in small doses. The Fuzz Wuz takes care of this in spades. I spent most of my test time with the mid contour at about 3-4 oclock. Like to play with controlled feedback? Its here. I felt like Jimi but the neighbors didnt know any different. Hit a note and wait a tick for the bloom of tube feedback goodness to take over. Smoking tube tone for sure, I was grinning the entire time.
Take the volume past about 3 oclock and the sag starts to kick in so I left it at about 3. I have been going through literally hundreds of high end guitar pedals to get this type of overdrive and tube tone. I can assume that the 50 watt Bumbox amplifiers deliver this in a gigable package. The Fuzz Wuz definately has it going on. I can see micing it up in the studio for some incredible overdriven solo meltdown. The volume is not enough to gig with but to satisfy a serious need for tube saturation in your room it does the trick wonderfully.
If you are one of those players that like to have gear that when folks see it they say "What the ------- is that? " this is it! Each amp is hand built , painted and a work of art. As seen in the pic the test model is not your everyday boring looking amp. The green felt on the front is nice and.....whats the word i am thinking of? Fuzzy thats it!
A work of art and a serious little tone box the Fuzz wuz was a blast to play. Its just alot of fun! Bumbox also offers higher wattage amps, combos and a pedal. The next time you consider dropping a couple hundred bucks on a pedal think about looking at an amp instead.
